AMNESIA Information
Description
Anterograde amnesia is a form of amnesia, or memory loss, where new events are not transferred to long-term memory. After the onset of the disorder, the sufferer will not be able to recall events which occurred only moments earlier, once their attention has shifted to something else.
Signs & Symptons
The following are the most common symptoms of indigestion. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include: pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen belching and loud intestinal sounds (borborygmi) nausea constipation poor appetite diarrhea flatulence The symptoms of indigestion may resemble other medical conditions or problems. Always consult your physician for a diagnosis.
Risk Factors
Some causes of indigestion may include the following: stomach or duodenal ulcers stomach irritation (gastritis) regurgitation or reflux of acid from the stomach inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis) lactose intolerance (inability to digest lactose, a milk sugar, and dairy products) irritable bowel syndrome and other disorders affecting intestinal motility swallowing air (aerophagia) anxiety or depression medications that irritate the stomach lining smoking drinking too much alcohol.
Tests & Diagnostics
Often diagnosis is made based on physical examination. However, because indigestion can be a sign of more serious medical problems, often laboratory examinations and x-rays of the stomach and small intestine are performed to rule out other problems. Sometimes, endoscopy is also performed.
Treatment
Specific treatment for indigestion will be determined by your physician based on: your age, overall health, and medical history extent of the condition your tolerance of specific medicines, procedures, or therapies expectations for the course of the condition your opinion or preference Avoiding foods and situations that can cause indigestion is one of the most successful ways to treat the problem. While many persons feel antacids may help, indigestion is not the result of stomach acid, so these are not an appropriate treatment. Smokers may be advised to quit smoking or avoid smoking before meals. Also, exercising after a meal can be a cause of indigestion, so scheduling exercise before a meal, or waiting at least an hour after eating, can also help prevent indigestion.
Prevention
Eat small meals so the stomach does not have to work as hard or as long. Eat slowly. Avoid foods that contain high amounts of acids, such as citrus fruits and tomatoes. If stress is a trigger for your indigestion, reevaluating your lifestyle may help to reduce stress. Learn new methods for managing stress, such as relaxation and biofeedback techniques. Smokers should consider quitting smoking, or at least not smoking right before eating, as smoking can irritate the stomach lining. Cut back on alcohol consumption because alcohol can irritate the stomach lining. Avoid wearing tight-fitting garments because they tend to compress the stomach, which can cause its contents to enter the esophagus. Do not exercise with a full stomach. Rather, exercise before a meal or at least one hour after eating a meal. Do not lie down right after eating. Wait at least 3 hours after your last meal of the day before going to bed. Sleep with your head elevated (at least six inches) above your feet and use pillows to prop yourself up.
